Absentee-ballot related problem; Registration-related problem |
White Bear Lake, Ramsey County, Minnesota |
Voter reports via e-mail:
My name is M-- H-- and I am writing to report a problem I experience when I went to vote via absentee ballot in Minnesota.
I have lived at the same address in White Bear Lake, Minnesota for over six years. I've voted numerous times based on this residence without any problems. I will be away from my precinct on Election Day so I went to our City Hall to vote via absentee ballot on Friday, October 29th. Unfortunately, when I returned my absentee ballot application to the desk clerk she said "I wasn't in the book" and that "they did not have a M-- H-- at my home address". The desk clerk told me she could not give me a ballot. I explained that there must be some mistake because I've lived at the same address and voted several times over the last six years. She said she would have to call "downtown" (meaning St. Paul at the Ramsey County building.) There was a line, seven people deep, when my problem was discovered.
After waiting over 10 minutes for the Ramsey County office to answer the telephone, the White Bear Lake desk clerk conversed with a county employee and then reported that my last name was mis-spelled (H--O-- instead of H--E--) and that they promised to "fix it" in my record downtown. The desk clerk in White Bear Lake then gave me an absentee ballot (without asking to see my driver's license or any other I.D.) I filled out my ballot, put it in the sealed envelope and returned it to the desk clerk. I asked if my vote would be counted and the clerk again said they would "fix it downtown." I can't help but wonder if my vote will actually be counted or if they will reject it when they open it because they "don't have a M-- H--" at my address. It makes me sick to my stomach that, in the most important Presidential election in my lifetime, my ballot might not be considered. I also hate to think what happens to people in a similiar situation who do not speak English or do not understand their rights as a voter or do not have the time to wait for problems to be "fixed". I can only imagine how much worse these problems will be when the polls are busy on November 2nd.
Thank you for the work your organization is doing.
