Voter identified three problems she experienced at the polls. First, she was upset that the poll workers inquired whether she was Republican or Democrat, in spite of the fact that it was listed on her voter registration card. Secondly, her ballot did not include a candidate for which she wanted to vote. When she requested assistance from poll workers, she was told I don\'t know. Finally, she also questioned whether she had the right to vote for precinct workers. |

The caller's daughter, who attends University of Central Florida in Orlando, was approached to sign a petition. It turned out that what the person had her sign (saying that it was an affidavit to verify her signature) was a voter registration form. The next thing she knew, she was registered as a Republican in her home county of Pascoe. The girl was furious and both she and her mum called the county clerk and sorted the individual situation out for her, but she wanted to report that she was not the only one who was approached to sign up in this way.[P] |

Voter works with ACORN; ACORN had an early voting drive and brought about 50 people to the polls; they had informed the election officials that they would be bringing a large number of people; following is a list of the problems that Voter identified at the voting location:
- Both absentee ballots and early vote ballots are two pages long (front and back); only the first page is transalted into Spanish; the second page, which is not translated, includes, among other things, a proposed amendment to raise the minimum wage
- There was not a Spanish translator
- There were three police officers standing directly in front of the entrance to the voting place
- Some people attempted to cast provisional ballots because their names did not appear on the voting roles. They were told that they would have to wait for a supervisor. They waited for 1.5 hours, but no supervisor appeared. Those waiting eventually left without having voted.
- The computers crashed frequently
- Many people were confused as to what to do with the ballots, and they did not receive assistance from the ballot workers
- There were no curtains on the voting booths, and, because the room was quite crowded, there was no privacy for the people voting
- A woman came to vote who is blind. The ballot workers were not sure how to assist her and had a public conversation for .5 hours amongst themselves and people waiting to vote about how to assist the woman
- Because of the long lines, people had to wait 2-3 hours to vote. As a result, they all got parking tickets. |

Caller was assisting early voters in a line outside a public library in Orlando. She wanted to refer several who had problems to our Election Protection Hotline. She used her cell phone to call us and could not get through because our line always said her zip code (32803) was invalid. Several others in line tried their zip codes and could not get through either. (She was not sure what zip codes they tried--all were Orlando voters.) When the caller went home, she tried us on her land line was able to get through easily. |

caller just voted and discovered that the actual ballot listed a candidate that was crossed out as "withdrawn" on the sample ballot he had earlier received. The position was for soil water conservation district supervisor in Group 5. The caller is concerned that votes for a candidate who is actually withdrawn could tilt the race unfairly between the two remaining candidates. |

Caller's son was registered to vote in Orange County. Unknown to him someone then registered him in Leon County. The LEon County registration application was pulled and signatures compared. Her son's signature did not match the Leon registration signature. When he went to vote in the September election he was told his registration had been cancelled. He was allowed to cast a provisional ballot. Caller also indicated that recently 1400 photocopies of voter registrations were submitted to the election office. Many of these were students from A&M university in Orange County. These registrations may be thrown out because original registrations were not provided.
Caller believes that someone is falsely registering voters in improper counties. She believes this is being done to prevent voters from casting votes in their proper counties come election day. |

The caller is the phone captain at a Bethesda, MD phone bank which is doing outreach for Florida Consumer Action Network Fund which is affiliated with USAction. The caller received a call from the affected voter, who was sent an absentee ballot without presidential candidates listed on it.
She always votes absentee. But this year, her ballot had only the "amendments" on it, and not the presidential candidates. Her spouse, who never votes, told her it would be sent separately. So she sent it in as is. About a week later she still had not received the ballot for presidential candidates, so she called the election board. Spoke to 5 different people. Finally she got mad. A few days later, a man called and said they would drive her to the polls, and she could vote a good ballot.
But her husband is 84 and she and her son are handicapped (she has CAPD), so it is not possible for her to go to the polls. Her absentee ballot will not be fixed, and she is very disappointed because this race matters to her. |
